難波江の 芦のかりねの ~ like the time between the node of a reed ~

It is already the end of July. The Olympics have started. In Tokyo, the maximum temperature has been around 35 degrees Celsius for a long time. The heat is likely to continue into next week. It is easy to get sick, so I will drink lots of water and get a good night’s sleep.
I would like to introduce another poem about Naniwae, now Osaka Bay.

”なにはえの” is read as “Naniwaeno” and “こひ” is read as “koi.”
Also, there is a character you may have never seen before. ”ゑ”. This is a hiragana used in the old days. In the old days, It was pronounced as “we,” later it was pronounced as “e,” and is no longer used.
There are more than 100 types of hiragana letters like “ゑ” that are no longer used. You may see these old hiragana on the signs of eel and soba noodle restaurants.

Naniwae: This is the present Osaka Bay. This is the same place as “Naniwa Lagoon” introduced before.

Ashi: This is a gramineae plant that grows along the water’s edge. This is also the same plant as in the previous poem.

Karine: The part of the root from which plants were cut. It is a pun on the word “kari-ne,” meaning temporary lodging.

Hitoyo: It is a pun on the word for a single knot of the plant (一節ひとよ) and the word for a single night (一夜ひとよ).

Hitoyoyoyue: It is because it was one night.

Mio-tsukushi: It is a pun on the word “澪標みおつくし,” a stake used to mark the crossing of a cove by a ship, and the word “身みを尽つくし,” which means to dedicate oneself.

Koiwatarubeki: Will I continue to think of that person?

現代語訳

難波江なにわえに生はえる芦あしの節ふしのように短みじい夜だったからこそ、私は入いり江えの澪標みおつくしのように、身みを尽つくしてあなたのことを思おもい続つづけるのだろうか。

Is it because the night was as short as a knot of ashi growing in the Naniwa lagoon that I continue to think of you with all my might, like a mark in a water channel in the inlet?

This poem is composed by imagining the feelings of a prostitute living in Naniwae.
She cannot forget the person with whom she spent the night on her journey. Because it was for a short time, she cannot forget him. This poem expresses the feeling of wondering if I will continue to think of him forever. When one has been with someone for a long time, one begins to see the bad parts of them. It can be that we can feel strongly about them because we only know a little about the person. At the same time, it conveys the sadness of a prostitute.

以前いぜん紹介しょうかいした歌うたと似にていますね。
It is similar to the poem I introduced before.

難波潟なにわがた みじかき芦あしの ふしの間まも あはでこの世よを過すぐしてよとや

Can we not see each other even for a short time, like the time between the node of a reed that grow in the Naniwa Lagoon (Osaka Bay)? Are you saying I should spend my time without meeting you?

 この歌うたも難波なにわという地名ちめい、芦あしという植物しょくぶつを詠よんでいます。また、「芦あしのひとよ」、「短みじかき芦あしのふしの間ま」という表現ひょうげんで、「芦あしの節ふし」を短みじかい時間じかんの例たとえとして使つかっています。

This poem also refers to the name of a place called Naniwa and a plant called Ashi. Both poems use “the node of a reed” as a metaphor for a short time with the expressions, “Ashi no hitoyo,” and “short Ashi no fushi no hina.”

Both use the same place names and the same plants in their love poems, but the moods are quite different.
Namba Lagoon is a poem about the lamentation of not being able to meet the person she loved even for a short time. It is said that Ise who composed this poem was a beautiful poet who lived from the late 9th century to the early 10th century.
“Naniwae no Ashi no Fushiyono~” expresses a prostitute’s feelings of not being able to forget the person with whom she had agreed to spend only one night. The poem was composed by a woman named Koukamonin Betsudo, who lived around the 12th century. She was a lady of the Imperial court who served the Empress.

There are many works in waka poetry that we now call homages. With the same subject matter as a famous old poem, the new one gives a different feel. Incorporates the feeling of a new era in it.
A woman’s poem from around the 9th century and another woman’s one from around the 12th century. What did you feel about them? The interesting thing about waka is that we can imagine and enjoy the feelings even if the time or position changes.

 ここまで読よんでくれてありがとうございました。時代じだいが変かわり、よくなっていることが多おおいはずですが、昔むかしと違ちがう暑あつさにはたえられません。身体からだに気きをつけてお過すごしください。

Thank you for reading this far. Times change and many things must have been better, but I cannot bear the heat that is different from the past. Please take care of yourself.
