多読とは
みなさんは、多読という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？
漢字を見て「たくさん読むことかな？」と想像したと思います。正解です。たくさん読むことです。もう少しくわしく言うと、外国語学習において、文章をたくさん読んで外国語の能力を高める活動のことです。多読をする時は、レベルにあった本や絵本などを使います。また、辞書や Googleなどを使わず、わからない単語があれば文脈から意味を推測したり、その単語を無視しながら、だいたいの内容を理解することを目指します。多読をすると、読解力だけではなく、リスニングの力も向上すると言われています。
私は普段日本語を教えていますが、英語学習者でもあるので多読をやってみたいと思っていました。何を読もうか考えていましたが、面白い話じゃないとあきそうだし、私の学習者さんにはハリーポッターの原作が好きな人が多いので、ハリーポッターを読むことにしました。
Looking at the kanji, you probably imagined, “Is it reading a lot?” Correct. It means reading a lot. To be more specific, it is the activity reading many texts to improve foreign language proficiency in language learning. When doing extensive reading, you use books or picture books that match your level, and you aim to understand the general content without a dictionary, Google, etc. You guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from context, or skip them. It’s said that extensive reading improves not only reading comprehension but also listening skills.
I usually teach Japanese, but since I’m also an English learner, I wanted to try extensive reading in English. I was thinking about what to read, but figured it wouldn’t be interesting unless it was engaging. Many of my students love the original Harry Potter books, so I decided to read Harry Potter.

アマゾンから届いた時「ぶ厚い．．．」と思いました。また、ファンタジーだから普段使わない言葉が多くて難しいんじゃないかなと不安でしたが、映画を見ていたので何とか読むことができました。映画には無いシーンもたくさんあったのですが、意外と理解できました。最初、wand や broomstick という単語はわからなかったのですが、読んでいるうちにそれらが使われているシーンから「杖かな？」「ほうきだ！」と推測することができました。意味が分からなくて無視した言葉もありましたが、内容はだいたい理解できました。とてもおもしろいですね。あっという間に1巻を読み終えました。
キングスクロス駅やダイアゴンアレイ、ホグワーツの描写がとてもいいですね。わくわくします。それに、ハリー達の気持ちの描写に引き込まれます。JKローリングは子どもの気持ちをとてもよく理解している人だと思いました。辛くて泣きたくなる気持ち、恥ずかしいと思う気持ち、怒りたくなる時の感じ、子どもが調子に乗っている時の感じがよく伝わってきます。あと、手紙が来るタイミングがとてもいい。こういう時に手紙が来たらうれしい、救われるというタイミングで手紙が来ます。 決して幸せではない生い立ちのハリーが友情と見守る愛に支えられて成長していくのが印象的です。とても素晴らしい作品ですね。
When it arrived from Amazon, I thought, “This is thick…” I was also worried it might be difficult because it’s a fantasy and uses a lot of words that aren’t normally used, but since I’d seen the movies, I managed to get through it. There were lots of scenes not in the films, but I understood them surprisingly well. At first, I didn’t know words like “wand” or “broomstick,” but as I read, I could guess from the scenes where they were used, like “Is that a wand?” or “It’s a broom!” There were some words I skipped over because I didn’t understand them, but I understood the story. It’s really interesting. I finished Volume 1 in no time.
The descriptions of King’s Cross Station, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts are fantastic. They made me excited. Besides, the portrayal of Harry and the others’ emotions really draws me in. I thought that JK Rowling is a person who really understands the child’s heart. She conveys so well those feelings of being so sad you want to cry, feeling embarrassed, that urge to get angry, and that sense of a child getting carried away. Also, the timing of the letters arriving is perfect. They come at exactly those moments when he’d be happy to receive one, when it feels like a lifeline. It’s striking how Harry, who certainly didn’t have a happy upbringing, grows up supported by friendship and the love of those watching over him. It’s a truly wonderful work.
最近は日本語のレッスンの始めに、学習者のみなさんとハリーポッターの話をしています。みなさんハリーポッターが好きなので、毎回「どこまで読みましたか？」と聞かれます。さすが、世界的ベストセラーですね。私は今、2巻の途中まで読んでいます。
ほとんど首無しニックの500年目のデスデイパーティのところまで読みました。
上の文には聞いたことのない単語が含まれています。でも、ハリーポッターが好きな人なら、意味が想像できるはずです。日本語での表現もおもしろいですね。
Lately, I’ve been starting my Japanese lessons by talking about Harry Potter with my students. Since everyone loves Harry Potter, I’m always asked, “How far have you read?” It’s truly a worldwide bestseller. I’m currently reading partway through the second book.
I’ve read up to the part about Nearly Headless Nick’s 500th anniversary death celebration.
The sentence above contains words you might not have heard before. But if you like Harry Potter, you should be able to guess their meaning. The Japanese expressions are interesting too.
