Tanabata ~

As I write this blog today is July 6. It has been a very hot day. The highest temperature in Tokyo reached 34 degrees Celsius, and in Shizuoka Prefecture the temperature rose to 39 degrees Celsius. It will continue to be hot for some time to come.
Tomorrow, July 7, is Tanabata Day. If you are learning Japanese, you may know it. Tanabata is a festival that combines the legend of stars from China and Japanese events to wish for the improvement of calligraphy and arts. Although it is not a national holiday, families with children and schools prepare bamboo branches and decorate them with origami ornaments and strips of paper with wishes written on them.

Long ago, there was a heavenly god and his daughter. His daughter’s name was Orihime. She was a weaver of cloth on a loom.
Orihime married a man who was taking care of cows across the river, Amanokawa (Milky Way). The man’s name was Hikoboshi. He was a diligent worker.
They couldn’t enjoy being together more. They spend their time very happily. But both of them gradually stop working.
The god of heaven gets angry and separates them to the two banks of the Amanokawa. Orihime and Hikoboshi can no longer see each other. Orihime, who cannot see Hikoboshi, spends her days crying.
Seeing Orihime crying every day, the god of Heaven began to feel sorry for her.
So, the god of heaven allows the two to meet only once a year. A bird called magpie make a bridge over the Amanokawa to allow them to pass the river. The day when Orihime and Hikoboshi meet once a year is July 7, Tanabata Day.

Orihime is the star Vega in the constellation Lyra and Hikoboshi is Altair in the constellation Aquila. The Amanokawa is literaly translated as Heavenly river. It is Milky Way in English.

A love affair in young days. There is a feeling in my distant memory that everything else didn’t matter, either because my feelings were satisfied or because I want to escape from reality. People would be in trouble later, so they would still study and work.
It seems to be strict to break them up and prevent them from seeing each other. I wondered what kind of events and interactions took place between the time God began to think, “These two don’t work much since they got married,” and the time God decided, “Let’s part them.

On a different note, tomorrow, July 7, the JLPT will be administered. Two of my students will take the JLPT this time. I wish them good results.
