The Sino-Japanese War that began in July 1937 and the Pacific War that started in December 1941 ended with the acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration on August 14, 1945. The next day, on August 15, Emperor Showa’s voice was broadcast over the radio to inform the Japanese people of the war’s end. Although the date of the end of World War II differs from country to country, Japan defines this date as the day of the war’s end.

Potsdam Declaration: A declaration by the U.S., U.K., and China demanding Japan’s surrender. Later, the Soviet Union joined in.

In this war, Japan inflicted immense suffering on China and other Asian nations. Many people also suffered within Japan itself. Moreover, this war saw the first use of atomic bombs in human history.
With the resolve that such events must never be repeated, postwar Japan has moved forward.

Now, August 15 is designated as the Day of Mourning for the War Dead and Prayers for Peace. Events to mourn for those who died in the war and gatherings to reflect on peace are held across Japan. If you live in Japan, you will hear sirens at noon on this day. The sirens sound for 30 seconds. While the sirens are sounding, we pray silently. Mokuto means to pray without speaking out loud.
