ゆらのとを　わたるふなびと　かぢをたえ　ゆくへもしらぬ　こひのみちかな

「かぢ」は「かじ」、「ゆくへ」は「ゆくえ」、「こひ」は「こい」と読みます。

言葉の意味

由良ゆらの門と：Yura no to
京都の北側きたがわにある由良川ゆらがわという川の河口かこうであると言われています。潮しおの流ながれが複雑ふくざつで、舟ふねで進すすむのが難むずかしいところです。

It is said to be the river mouth of the Yura River in northern Kyoto. The tidal currents are complex, making it a difficult place to go by boat.


わたる舟人ふなびと：舟ふねに人を乗のせて川や海うみを渡わたる人

A boatman who crosses a river or sea carrying people on a boat.


かぢをたへ：かじがなくなって。「かじ」とは、むかしの舟ふねの進すすむ方向ほうこうをコントロールするための棒ぼうのことです。現在げんざいの大きな船ふねで使つかわれている舵かじとは異ことなります。

Having lost the rudder (kaji). A “kaji” refers to a wooden stick/oar used in old times to control the direction of small boats. It is different from the rudders used on modern large ships.

ゆくへも知しらぬ：かじがなくなったから、舟ふねがどこに行ってしまうのかもわからない。

Because the rudder is gone, the boatman does not know where the boat will drift.

恋こいの道かな：恋こいの道だな。ここでは、私の恋と同じだという意味いみで使つかっています。

Ah, the path of love. Here, it is used to mean “just like my love.”

現代語訳

由良ゆらの門とでかじをなくしてしまった舟人ふなびとのように、私の恋こいもどこにたどりつくのかわからなくて、途方とほうにくれていますよ。

Just like a boatman who has lost his rudder at the Strait of Yura, I do not know where my love will end up, and I am completely at a loss.


流ながれが複雑ふくざつなところで、小さな舟ふねのかじがなくなったら、途方とほうにくれますね。この歌うたの作者さくしゃ、曽禰好忠そねのよしただは、その状況じょうきょうに自分じぶんの恋こいを重かさねて詠よんでいます。難むずかしい恋こいだったのでしょう。
曽禰好忠そねのよしただがいつ生うまれていつ亡なくなったのかは、よくわかっていません。後のちに歌の才能さいのうを高く評価ひょうかされるようになりますが、今で言う「人とのコミュニケーションが苦手にがてな人」だったようです。また、朝廷ちょうてい(government in Heian/Nara era)の仕事をしていても身分みぶん(social status)は高くなかったため、恋のみならずあらゆることの先行さきゆきがわからず、悩なやみの多おおい人生じんせいであったと思われます。

If you lose the rudder of a small boat in a place with complex currents, you would be at a loss. The poet, Sone no Yoshitada, overlapped his own love with that situation. It must have been a difficult love.

It is not clearly known when Sone no Yoshitada was born or when he died. Although his poetic talent was highly evaluated later on, at the time, he seems to have been what we would call today “a person who is not good at interpersonal communication.” In addition, because his social status in his government job was not high, it is believed that he had a life full of worries, not knowing the future of not only his love life but of everything in his life.


途方とほうにくれる：トラブルがあり、どうすればいいのかわからなくて、とても困こまっているという状況じょうきょうを表あらわします。

Expresses a situation where something goes wrong and you are deeply troubled, not knowing what to do.


～のみならず：～だけではなく

コミュニケーション

「コミュニケーション」と漢字の「力(ちから)」を合わせた「コミュ力(コミュリョク)」という言葉ことばがあります。カタカナの「カ」と漢字の「力」の形かたちがほとんど同おなじなので、字じを見ると「komyuka…?」と思ってしまいそうですが、これは「komyuryoku」と読みます。
「彼かれはコミュ力りょくが高い」というように使つかわれます。

There is a word called “Komyuryoku” (コミュ力), which combines “communication” with the Japanese kanji for “power/ability” (力). Since the katakana “カ” and the kanji “力” look almost identical, if you look at the written word, you might think it’s pronounced “komyuka…?”, but it is read as “komyuryoku.”

It is used in sentences like, “彼はコミュ力が高い.”


コミュ力とは、人との意思疎通いしそつうを円滑えんかつに行おこない、信頼関係しんらいかんけいを築きづくための総合的そうごうてきなコミュニケーション能力のうりょくのことです。

Komyuryoku refers to comprehensive communication abilities to smoothly interact with people and build relationships of trust.


簡単かんたんに言うと、トラブルなく人の話はなしを聞きいたり自分じぶんのことを伝つたえたり、相手あいてといい関係かんけいを作つくったりするための言語げんごを含ふくむ能力のうりょくのことです。
ちょっと「コミュ力りょく」で検索けんさくすると、「コミュ力が高い人の特徴とくちょう」「コミュ力を上あげるための7つのステップ」「コミュ力を上あげて転職てんしょくに有利ゆうりに」などというブログのタイトルが並ならびます。現代人げんだいじんの社会しゃかいで生いきるための必死ひっしさが伝つたわってきます。
確たしかに大切たいせつな力ちからであることには違ちがいないのですが、常つねに強しいられるとしんどい。
ほどほどの思おもいやりを持もっておだやかに生いきたいものですが、社会しゃかいの中で生いきるのって難むずかしいですね。

To put it simply, it is the ability (including language skills) to listen to others, express yourself, and build good relationships with people without causing trouble.
If you search a bit for “komyuryoku,” blog titles such as “Characteristics of people with high komyuryoku,” “7 steps to improve your komyuryoku,” and “Improve your komyuryoku to gain an advantage in job changing” line up. You can feel the desperation of modern people trying to survive in society.
It is certainly an important ability without a doubt, but being constantly forced to have it feels exhausting. I would like to live peacefully with a moderate amount of thoughtfulness toward others, but living in society sure is difficult, isn’t it?
